Mural for Carmen Herrera at the Blanton Museum of Art

Carmen Herrera’s Verde que te quiero verde (Green How I Desire You Green) at the Blanton Museum is a take on her series “Blanco y Verde” from the 1940’s. Herrera’s first mural installation and final creation before her passing in 2022, at the age of 106, was a high profile and demanding project. This installation was part of a 35 million dollar renovation of the Blanton’s exterior patio on the Capitol Mall in Austin. I hand drew Herrera’s design onsite and painted it with brush and roller to the exact geometric dimensions and balance.

Señora Herrera on the mural:
“It is an honor that my first major public mural commission will be with the Blanton Museum of Art, an institution that I have admired and respected for decades. As a museum that has long been at the forefront of collecting work by artists of Latin American descent, as well as the place where Ellsworth Kelly realized his last great work of art, entering the collection at this moment marks a high point in my long career.”
